Surprising New 2014 Women’s Health Facts

As women, we are constantly looking for new ways to improve our health. There are some surprising health facts for women that we have just learned about this year. Everything from lowering your chance of breast cancer, a surprising way to lose weight to an interesting discovery about sleep... we are going to cover it all.

Cancer is a scary and traumatic thing... and as women, we are 100 percent more likely to get breast cancer than men. It’s always a good idea to do our monthly self-breast exam as our own form of prevention. But researchers just found some encouraging news for women. Exercise and activity will reduce your chance of getting breast cancer (up to 12 percent)! Any kind of activity or daily exercise is obviously good for our health. It keeps us in shape and gives us energy, but now it is another preventative step to avoid breast cancer. Women should be taking this seriously because our health is a serious matter. Any steps to avoid breast cancer (or any cancer) should be taken by all women.

As mentioned above, exercise does keep women in shape and helps us to lose weight. But you will never guess what else can help you lose weight. TEQUILA. Researchers from Mexico say that the natural sugars derived from the agave plant are what contribute to the weight loss benefits. In the research, the test mice were protected from obesity and Type 2 Diabetes from these sugars. Unfortunately, this only applies to straight tequila and not margaritas. Regardless, what a great health tip this is for women.

Most women think sleep is always good for our health. Sleep IS good for your health, but it can actually be bad for you to sleep too much. The amount of sleep you need on average differs for each person depending on age and health, but sleeping more than ten hours a night is not healthy for us. It can make you MORE tired and exhausted, which Dr. Lisa Shives calls “sleep drunkenness.” We all wish that sleeping forever would improve our health, but unfortunately science is against us on this one. But that means women should stop worrying about sleep and enjoy the hours we have!
